Recently, Norwegian researchers have expressed concern about salmon as a human food. They stated that salmon should not be eaten by children, youth and pregnant women. Reason for concern was the presence of Persistant Organic Pollutants (POPs) accumulating in the fat-rich fish. Among these environmental poisons are PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) and DDTs (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane). These POPs are considered to negatively affect bone density, brain development and are associated with autism, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and reduced IQ. They also affect other organ systems in the body, such as the immune system and the metabolism.
These news indeed sound unappetizing. Should we resist eating salmon from now on?
