Saltwater trout

Saltwater trout, commonly referring to sea-run forms of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) or brown trout (Salmo trutta), are cultivated in coastal aquaculture systems where freshwater-reared juveniles are transferred to brackish or marine environments for grow-out. These fish combine the desirable traits of freshwater trout with the growth advantages of saline farming conditions. They are especially popular in cold-water regions of Europe and parts of the Mediterranean.

All feed formulas developed by Aller Aqua at the Aller Aqua Research Centre follow these requirements to ensure proper growth and health:

  • Protein Needs: Saltwater trout are carnivorous and require high protein diets to support fast growth and good health. Typically, feed contains around 45-55% crude protein, especially during juvenile and grow-out stages.

  • Fat and Energy Needs: Lipids in the diet usually range from 12-18% to supply energy and essential fatty acids (EPA and DHA) critical for metabolic functions, skin and flesh quality, and immune response.

  • Essential Nutrients: Balanced inclusion of vitamins (A, C, D, E, and B-complex), minerals (calcium, phosphorus, selenium, zinc), and essential fatty acids is necessary to promote growth, health, and disease resistance. Carotenoids may be added to enhance flesh coloration.

  • Feed Ingredients: High-quality marine fishmeal and fish oil are primary ingredients, with sustainable alternatives like plant proteins, insect meals, and algae-based oils increasingly incorporated.

The range of solutions developed by Aller Aqua is suitable for each stage of the fish lifecycle as well as the following farming methods:

  • Marine Net Pens: The most common method, especially in Norway, Chile, and Canada, where saltwater conditions are ideal.

  • Land-Based Hatcheries and Freshwater Rearing: Juveniles (smolts) are raised in freshwater hatcheries before being transferred to saltwater pens.

  • RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture Systems): Used increasingly for early life stages or even full-cycle production in land-based, biosecure systems.

  • Cold-Water Sites: Requires well-oxygenated, cold marine water to thrive and reduce disease risk.

A carefully selected composition of raw materials and verified feed formulas ensure that the fish is rich in minerals and vitamins, and at the same time that the texture of meat is of the highest quality. We make sure that fish grown using solutions provided by Aller Aqua offer the following benefits:

  • Delicious and Nutritious: Saltwater trout have firm, pink-orange flesh, a mild, rich flavor, and are popular as a salmon alternative.

  • Rich in Omega-3s: Excellent source of EPA and DHA, supporting heart, brain, and joint health.

  • High in Protein: Great for lean muscle building, low in saturated fat.

When farmed responsibly, saltwater trout offers a lower-impact alternative to wild-caught species.
