Arctic Charr

Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) is a cold-water fish belonging to the Salmonidae family, closely related to trout and salmon. It thrives in Arctic and sub-Arctic regions and is farmed mainly in Canada, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Arctic charr is highly valued for its firm texture, mild flavor, and adaptability to aquaculture.

All feed formulas developed by Aller Aqua at the Aller Aqua Research Centre follow these requirements to ensure proper growth and health:

  • High-Protein Diet: Requires a protein content of 40-50%, primarily from fish meal, plant-based proteins, and insect meal.

  • Fat and Energy Needs: A diet with 15-25% fat ensures optimal growth and provides essential omega-3 fatty acids.

  • Pelleted Feed: Arctic charr are fed sinking or floating pellets formulated for cold-water species.

  • Nutrient Balance: Essential vitamins (A, C, D, and E) and minerals (calcium, phosphorus, selenium) support health, bone strength, and disease resistance.

The range of solutions developed by Aller Aqua is suitable for each stage of the fish lifecycle as well as the following farming methods:

  • Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS): Common for Arctic charr farming, offering precise water quality control and year-round production.

  • Tank-Based Farming: Both indoor and outdoor tanks are used to maintain optimal growing conditions.

  • Raceway Systems: Flow-through systems provide continuous water exchange, improving fish health and growth rates.

  • Pond and Lake Farming: In colder regions, Arctic charr are sometimes farmed in natural or artificial ponds and lakes.

  • Polyculture Systems: Arctic charr can be farmed alongside other species like trout in integrated aquaculture setups.

A carefully selected composition of raw materials and verified feed formulas ensure that the fish is rich in minerals and vitamins, and at the same time that the texture of meat is of the highest quality. We make sure that fish grown using solutions provided by Aller Aqua offer the following benefits:

  • High in Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Supports heart health, brain function, and reduces inflammation.

  • Mild, Delicate Flavor: Arctic charr has a taste between salmon and trout, making it versatile for cooking (grilling, baking, smoking).

  • Lean but Rich in Healthy Fats: Provides a balance of lean protein and beneficial fats.

  • Low in Contaminants: Farmed Arctic charr generally has lower mercury and pollutant levels than some wild fish.

Efficient feed conversion and responsible farming make Arctic charr a sustainable seafood option.
