Grouper

Groupers are a group of carnivorous, warm-water marine fish from the family Serranidae, with commonly farmed species including Epinephelus coioides (orange-spotted grouper) and Epinephelus lanceolatus (giant grouper). They are highly valued in Asian and Mediterranean markets for their firm, white flesh and rich flavor. Though relatively slow-growing and sensitive in early life stages, groupers are increasingly farmed using specialized methods to meet market demand.

All feed formulas developed by Aller Aqua at the Aller Aqua Research Centre follow these requirements to ensure proper growth and health:

  • High-Protein Diet: Diets typically contain 45–50% protein to meet the species’ carnivorous nature and promote robust growth. Protein is derived from fishmeal, squid meal, krill meal, and increasingly plant-based proteins such as soy protein concentrate and wheat gluten. Juveniles require higher protein levels, while adults are transitioned to slightly lower-protein diets for cost efficiency.

  • Fat and Energy Needs: Dietary fat levels range from 10–16%, tailored by growth phase and temperature conditions. Energy is supplied via fish oil, krill oil, and plant oils like soybean or rapeseed. Balanced diets help optimize feed conversion and support healthy liver and flesh quality.

  • Essential Nutrients: Fortified with vitamins A, C, D3, and E to enhance immunity and antioxidant response. Minerals like phosphorus, calcium, zinc, and magnesium are critical for bone and metabolic health. Omega-3 fatty acids are included for both fish vitality and consumer health benefits.

The range of solutions developed by Aller Aqua is suitable for each stage of the fish lifecycle as well as the following farming methods:

  • Sea Cages: The most common grow-out method, especially in tropical and subtropical coastal areas, allowing for natural water flow and high biomass.

  • Land-Based Tanks: Used primarily for hatchery and nursery phases, with some semi-intensive grow-out in ponds or tanks near the coast.

  • Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS):

Used mainly for hatchery and nursery stages, where precise control of water quality is crucial for sensitive juveniles.

Pilot and commercial RAS farms for full grow-out exist, especially in high-value markets or land- and water-scarce regions.

Offers excellent biosecurity, resource efficiency, and year-round production, but requires higher capital investment and technical expertise.

  • Polyculture Options: Occasionally integrated with species like milkfish or seaweed to reduce waste and enhance system sustainability.

  • Hatcheries: Essential for seed production, as groupers have complex reproductive and larval rearing requirements.

A carefully selected composition of raw materials and verified feed formulas ensure that the fish is rich in minerals and vitamins, and at the same time that the texture of meat is of the highest quality. We make sure that fish grown using solutions provided by Aller Aqua offer the following benefits:

  • Premium Meat Quality: Grouper offers dense, white flesh with a mild yet rich flavor, ideal for grilling, steaming, or high-end cuisine.

  • Nutritious: High in lean protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and essential nutrients like selenium and vitamin B12.

  • High Market Value: Considered a luxury or festival food in many cultures, particularly in Asia and the Middle East.

  • Health Benefits: Supports heart and brain function due to healthy fats, while being low in saturated fats.
