Sea bream

Gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) is the most commonly farmed species, especially in Mediterranean aquaculture. It is a marine, euryhaline species, meaning it can adapt to various salinity levels. Sea bream are omnivorous, robust, and well-suited for farming in coastal and offshore environments, making them a staple of warm-water aquaculture in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

Learn more about Sea Bream

  • Balanced Commercial Pellets: Sea bream require a high-protein, moderate-fat diet, especially during the growing phase.

  • Omnivorous Diet: Feed typically contains marine and plant-based proteins, fish oil, and micronutrients.

  • Feeding Frequency: 2–3 times daily depending on water temperature and fish size.

  • Efficient Feed Conversion: With good FCR (feed conversion ratio), they grow efficiently and sustainably when managed properly.

  • Sea Cages (Marine Net Pens): Most common method — fish are grown in floating cages in coastal or offshore areas.

  • Land-Based RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture Systems): Increasingly used for juvenile production and biosecurity, especially in hatcheries.

  • Hatcheries: Eggs are produced and fry are raised in hatchery tanks before transfer to grow-out cages.

  • Polyculture Systems: Sometimes combined with other marine species like sea bass or mussels in integrated aquaculture systems.

  • Delicate Taste & Firm Texture: Sea bream is a popular table fish known for its white, flaky flesh and mild flavor.

  • Nutritional Value: High in lean protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and selenium.

  • Heart-Healthy: Omega-3 content supports cardiovascular health and reduces inflammation.

  • Widely Available & Versatile: Commonly found in supermarkets and restaurants; great for grilling, baking, or steaming.
