Sole

Sole typically refers to Solea solea, also known as the common sole or Dover sole. It’s a demersal (bottom-dwelling) marine fish, native to the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean. Sole is highly prized for its delicate flavor and texture, making it a valuable species in European aquaculture. Farming is mainly conducted in marine or brackish environments.

All feed formulas developed by Aller Aqua at the Aller Aqua Research Centre follow these requirements to ensure proper growth and health:

  • Protein Needs: Sole is a carnivorous fish with relatively high protein requirements, typically ranging from 40% to 50% crude protein in its diet, especially during early growth stages. Protein is essential for tissue growth, muscle development, and overall health.

  • Fat and Energy Needs: Fats provide a concentrated energy source and essential fatty acids, critical for metabolic processes and maintaining good health. Sole diets usually contain 8-15% lipids (fat) to meet energy demands. Fish oil or marine-based oils are often included to supply long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, vital for cell membrane integrity and immune function.

  • Essential Nutrients: Sole requires a balance of vitamins (A, D, E, C, and B-complex), minerals (calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iodine, zinc), and essential fatty acids (EPA and DHA) for optimum growth, reproduction, and disease resistance. Because sole is carnivorous, its diet typically incorporates high-quality fishmeal or alternative marine protein sources enriched with these micronutrients.

The range of solutions developed by Aller Aqua is suitable for each stage of the fish lifecycle as well as the following farming methods:

  • Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS): The most common and suitable method due to better control of water quality, temperature, and bottom conditions.

  • Tank-Based Systems: Sole are typically reared in shallow tanks with sand or soft substrates to mimic their natural behavior.

  • Brackish and Marine Ponds: Used occasionally, although harder to control growth and survival rates.

  • Monoculture or Polyculture: Often farmed in monoculture but can be part of integrated multi-trophic systems (IMTA) under specific conditions.

A carefully selected composition of raw materials and verified feed formulas ensure that the fish is rich in minerals and vitamins, and at the same time that the texture of meat is of the highest quality. We make sure that fish grown using solutions provided by Aller Aqua offer the following benefits:

  • Delicate, Mild Flavor: Considered a premium seafood product, especially in gourmet cuisine.

  • Lean Protein Source: Low in fat, high in quality protein.

  • Digestible & Allergy-Friendly: Well-tolerated and easily digestible, even by people with sensitive stomachs.

  • Rich in Nutrients: Contains B vitamins, phosphorus, and selenium, supporting metabolic and bone health.
