Sea bass - Europe

European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) is a highly valued marine fish species widely farmed across Southern Europe, particularly in the Mediterranean region (Greece, Turkey, Italy, Spain). It is a carnivorous, fast-growing species well-suited to aquaculture in marine and brackish environments. Known for its high market demand and culinary versatility, sea bass plays a central role in the European aquaculture industry.

All feed formulas developed by Aller Aqua at the Aller Aqua Research Centre follow these requirements to ensure proper growth and health:

  • High-Protein Diet: Diets typically contain 42–46% protein to support efficient growth, muscle development, and health. Protein is sourced from fishmeal, soybean meal, wheat gluten, and increasingly from sustainable plant and insect-based ingredients.
Juvenile diets have higher protein levels, which are gradually reduced as the fish mature.

  • Fat and Energy Needs: Fat content in the diet ranges from 14–20%, depending on life stage and water conditions. Energy comes from marine oils (fish oil) and plant-based oils such as rapeseed or linseed oil. Balanced energy-to-protein ratios are essential to optimize feed conversion and maintain flesh quality.

  • Essential Nutrients: Feeds are supplemented with vitamins A, D, C, and E to support immune health and oxidative balance. Important minerals like calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and selenium help with skeletal strength and metabolism.
Omega-3 fatty acids, naturally present in fish oil, enhance stress resistance and benefit human consumers.

The range of solutions developed by Aller Aqua is suitable for each stage of the fish lifecycle as well as the following farming methods:

  • Sea Cages (Marine Net Pens): The primary method, located in coastal or offshore areas with good water flow and oxygenation.

  • Hatcheries & Nurseries: Land-based facilities are used for breeding and early rearing in controlled conditions.

  • Flow-Through & RAS Units: Occasionally used for fingerling production or in land-based grow-out systems, especially in colder climates.

  • Polyculture Systems: Sometimes farmed together with sea bream or in Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) setups.

A carefully selected composition of raw materials and verified feed formulas ensure that the fish is rich in minerals and vitamins, and at the same time that the texture of meat is of the highest quality. We make sure that fish grown using solutions provided by Aller Aqua offer the following benefits:

  • Premium Quality Meat: Sea bass has white, flaky flesh with a mild, slightly sweet flavor; it’s a favorite in Mediterranean cuisine.

  • Nutritional Value: High in lean protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins D and B12, and selenium.

  • Health Benefits: Supports cardiovascular health, brain function, and a balanced diet.

Sea Bass is popular in restaurants and retail; sold whole, filleted, or as value-added products.
